Too Big to Fly? Not Your Labrador.
Most owners think a 30 kg+ dog has to stay at home. Here’s how to take yours almost anywhere.
Meet Richard and Archie
Archie is a 30 kg (66 lb) Labrador who loves tennis balls more than food and has never once been left behind. For years, that meant Richard only travelled by car. Every time he looked into flying, he ended up with 20 open browser tabs, a different answer on each, and the same conclusion: Archie was too big to fly.
Then one evening, a video stopped him: Pet Holiday Club, a pet travel company that helps owners of large dogs travel together, including flying with a large dog.
Pet Holiday Club recommended the right route and airline for a 30 kg Labrador and checked every document before they left home. Today, Archie has visited four countries and flies in the cabin, right next to Richard, at least three times a year.
“He’s the calmest passenger on the plane,” Richard says. “And I’m finally the calmest owner.”

Can a large dog fly in the cabin?
Yes, on the right flight. Many airlines only allow small dogs in a carrier under the seat, but select airlines and routes accept large dogs like Archie in the cabin. The hard part is knowing which options fit your dog’s size and breed, and exactly what each country and airline requires.
How to fly with a large dog: 4 steps
1. Start early. Some countries require a rabies blood test and a waiting period of several months, so plan at least three months ahead.
2. Microchip first, then vaccinate. Many countries only accept a rabies vaccine given after the microchip.
3. Pick the right airline and route. Size, weight and breed rules vary hugely, and some routes are far easier for big dogs.
4. Practise. Get your dog used to the harness or crate, airport noise and long periods of calm before travel day.
